LLRIB offers hall as temporary shelter for homeless

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) and Scattered Site Outreach Program have come to a temporary solution to housing the homeless population in the tri-communities.

On Tuesday, the LLRIB offered the use of Kitsaki Hall at Morin’s Hill as a place people can go to get out of the cold and access a safe spot to sleep. The facility was needed because necessary work at the Scattered Site location in La Ronge still needs to be completed.

“The shelter itself is not open, but we are doing our best to get it open,” said Kikinahk Friendship Centre executive director Ron Woytowich. “Chief Tammy Cook-Searson and the band have stepped up big time and offered their building for about a week while we work this out, mainly because of the storm. Their building is used for funerals and wakes and everything, so we can’t guarantee it will be open that long, but she said about a week while we work this out.”

Due to the weather, Woytowich explained a technician from Saskatoon was unable to travel to La Ronge to inspect the sprinkler system. He noted it is unknown whether the system will meet standards or if more work will need to be done.
