Melfort Mustangs acquire Ice Wolves captain in recent trade

Nov 24, 2021 | 5:16 PM

The La Ronge Ice Wolves have parted ways with team captain Nolan Doell who was traded to the Melfort Mustangs.

Doell became captain earlier this year after spending three seasons with the team. So far this season, he earned 26 points with 15 goals and 11 assists. Doell was traded for forward Tye Evans and defenceman Liam McInnis, along with a player development fee.

“Doeller has played very well for us. We just weren’t getting the consistency from the whole team and we when your record is eight and 14, you’ve got to do something,” Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski said. “We seemed stale and it could have been some other guys, but we thought this was going to be the best trade at this time for us to change things up.”

Kaminski wouldn’t say if a new captain would be named ahead of the team’s three consecutive games starting Nov. 26 in Humboldt against the Broncos. The Ice Wolves will then travel to take on the Yorkton Terriers on Nov. 27 before hosting the Weyburn Red Wings at the Mel Hegland Uniplex on Nov. 28.

The team most previously beat Weyburn in back-to-back games last week and Kaminski is hopeful those games were confidence builders. He explained the plan now is to go out tomorrow and have a simple road game.

“We’ve got to make plays when we can and, if not, we have to make sure pucks are in,” Kaminski said. “Don’t give them anymore opportunities than they are going to generate themselves. Offensively, we have to make sure we have traffic in front of their net. Our battle net front has got to be a lot better.”

The Ice Wolves are currently ranked 10th out of 12 teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with the Humboldt Broncos in the top spot.
