Hypothermia determined to be cause of death for local woman

La Ronge RCMP have confirmed a sudden death in the tri-communities earlier this month was due to hypothermia.

On Nov. 4, at approximately 9:30 a.m., police received a report of a sudden death on a trail near Bigstone Road. The deceased was determined to be a 26-year-old woman from the area. Her family was notified and an autopsy was ordered.

The RCMP investigation into the matter is now closed and Staff Sgt. Dean Bridle explained the sudden death is not considered suspicious with hypothermia appearing to be the cause. He noted homelessness didn’t appear to be an issue, adding it’s likely the individual laid down on the trail to sleep and succumbed to the cold weather.

According to Health Canada, hypothermia occurs when there is a drop in body temperature. Data from Environment Canada shows the temperature on Nov. 4 reached a low of -8.6 C.
