Klassen wins La Ronge municipal byelection

Matthew Klassen won Tuesday’s municipal byelection in La Ronge to become a town councillor.

According to unofficial election results, Klassen won with 152 votes with Glen Watchel placing second with 91. Robert Pacey Sr. came in third with 72 votes followed by Ron Warner with nine. There were 298 total votes, but one was spoiled and wasn’t counted.

The byelection was called after the sudden passing of Hugh Watt in August.

Klassen will be officially sworn in at a special meeting of council at 7 p.m. this evening. larongeNOW reached out to Klassen about the election win, but didn’t receive a response by publishing.

Klassen ran in the November 2020 general municipal election for mayor, but finished second place to Colin Ratushniak. In that election, Klassen received 145 out of 774 votes in a four-person race.
