Exhibition game at JRMCC showcases AA hockey
The Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) had special guests at the facility for a promotional hockey game on the weekend.
The Prince Albert U18 AA Vulcans and the Indigenous Sports Academy Eagles travel to the tri-communities on Saturday for an exhibition game. JRMCC Director of Sports and Recreation Kevin Roberts, who is co-manager with the Indigenous Sports Academy, explained it was a chance for residents and local youth to watch a higher calibre of hockey than is usually available.
“For La Ronge, we just have what they call house league hockey,” Roberts said. “It’s either A or B level. The AA calibre is usually in the bigger centres. Any boy from La Ronge or the North who wants to play higher level hockey, they typically have to play in a southern location.”
Roberts noted JRMCC has hosted such events like a special AAA hockey game in the past, which was also an opportunity to showcase the sport to the community.
