Sask. Federation of Labour demands government action on fifth wave

The province’s labour federation isn’t happy with the way Saskatchewan’s government has handled previous waves of COVID-19.

And the fifth wave is no different, in its eyes.

In a media release Monday, the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) had a few demands for the Moe government.

The demands include following public health expert advice, enacting measures to protect workers in all sectors, ensuring all workers have access to proper PPE — like N-95 masks — and calling an emergency legislative session to pass the bill to provide all workers with paid sick days.

“Once again, the Sask. Party is being reckless and choosing to delay taking action until it is too late,” SFL president Lori Johb said in a release.

“While other provinces are listening to health experts and putting protective measures in place, the Sask. Party is actually watering down public health measures and fudging COVID case count numbers. Their total failure at an attempt to even try to stop the virus from getting out of control all but guarantees that workers will get sick and our health care system will once again be brought to the brink of collapse.”

The SFL said it has been making these demands to protect workers since the pandemic started, but has been “continually ignored by the Sask. Party.”

“As hospitalizations increase across the country, it’s time for our government to stop burying their heads in the sand and take immediate action to keep workers safe and protect our health care system,” Johb said.
