NAR asks tri-community residents to support Betty White Challenge

Local animal shelters and rescue organizations around the world will benefit from the Betty White Challenge.

Today would have been the late Betty White’s 100 birthday if she hadn’t passed away on Dec. 31, 2021. In honour of her work towards promoting animal rights and her love for pets, the public has been asked to donate $5 in her legacy.

Northern Animal Rescue, based in the tri-communities, began advertising the challenge about one week ago.

“Since the first post, we have raised over $400 and, so far today, we have received about $515 in donations,” said board member Joanne Dickson. “It’s been really good. It’s a positive thing that’s happening.”

Dickson explained White was well-known for her passion for animals. She noted White used her entertainment projects and platform in a positive way to promote animal welfare. Dickson believes the response by the public to the challenge has been large because people have respect for her work and want to continue her legacy.

“Even when she was 90 years old, she had pets and, when she was asked what her favourite hobby was, she said it was having pets and helping animals,” she said.

Dickson added she was a fan of White and she had recently been watching some interviews with her. She said she was particularly a fan of White in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls.

Those who would like to donate to Northern Animal Rescue can do so by e-transfer at northernanimalrescue@gmail.com or by texting 1-306-420-6550. People can also go online to the organization’s website to make a donation via PayPal.

“If people can donate, donate what you can,” Dickson said. “It doesn’t have to be a big amount. The challenge is actually $5, but people have been pretty generous to us. We’re really grateful for the support.”
