New club ready to offer regular dance lessons next month

Feb 11, 2022 | 2:25 PM

It’s an exciting time for the Tri-Community Dance Club as board members prepare to host 12 weeks of regular classes beginning in March.

The classes, which will be held Mondays, Tuesday and Saturdays, will be led by Jenna Malach, the co-owner of The Performing Arts Warehouse and Stage Stars in Prince Albert. While she will be conducting the majority of the classes via Zoom and will be travelling to the tri-communities once or twice per month, Malach will be assisted by local resident Paiten Tegstrom who will be available to teach in person.

Classes will be held at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre, the same location where registration will occur on Feb. 15 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The entire 12 weeks of classes starting March 5 and ending May 28 is $150 or otherwise $50 per month.

“If it fills up, it fills up,” said board member Charlene Bosiak. “The extra seats will be available online after that, but we prefer people go down to the JR hall. I believe Paiten is going to be there and board members will be there to greet people, meet and answer any questions.”

The classes are for children between the ages of three to 13 and will cover various styles of dance including ballet, jazz, modern and hip hop. Participants will also have the opportunity to publicly perform at the Performing Arts Warehouse Recital at the EA Rawlinson Centre in Prince Albert on June 4 and 5, as well as the Napatak Ramble on Canada Day.

Bosiak explained public feedback so far has been positive, noting adults have expressed a desire to partake in dance lessons too. She added once the classes for kids are established, the club will likely start branching out and offer lessons to teenagers and older residents.

“I find La Ronge is very artistic,” Bosiak said. “We have sculptors, singers, musicians, we have a drama club, but we don’t have any expression for the performing arts with dance… Now they have a chance to have a whole range of different activities.”

Bosiak mentioned the board consists entirely of volunteers and that all donations will be invested back in the tri-communities. She said the club has been working with Dance Saskatchewan and members will also host dance programming in the summer thanks to a grant from the Town of La Ronge.
