Canadian Challenge organizers thankful for race supporters

Organizers are considering the 2022 Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race a success.

Overall, 19 mushers competed in either the 10-dog (200 miles), eight-dog (100 miles) or six-dog (50 miles) races between Feb. 22 to 26. Jesse Terry of Ontario was declared the winner in the 10-dog main event and went home with $3,000.

The winner of the eight-dog race was New Brunswick’s Remy Leduc who received $1,500. Lane Lawton of Alberta was the winner in the six-dog race and received $500.

“I would say, overall, everything went really well,” Canadian Challenge secretary Tanja Tabel said. “Most things went without a hitch. There’s always a few little hiccups here and there but overall I think it went really well. We had lots of great volunteers out and lots of help this year.”

While a 300-mile qualifier event was held for those who wanted to continue in the 10-dog race, no musher decided to complete it. Tabel explained mushers who registered but didn’t finish likely didn’t due to the condition of their dogs after the first 200 miles.

Mushers came from across the country to compete in the Canadian Challenge with two mushers travelling in from the United States. Tabel believes all the mushers went home happy and satisfied.

“Initially, we had more people signed up, but lots of last minute things happened for mushers whether their training wasn’t as much as they liked it to be or we got a lot of snow this year and that kind of changed things for some people,” she said.

Tabel wanted to thank volunteers, the Canadian Rangers, the Town of La Ronge and sponsors for their support in making the Canadian Challenge a success. Tabel noted the Canadian Rangers did a good job ensuring the trail was well packed, adding La Ronge staff were attentive to the needs of organizers.
