Masking, vaccination requirements end at NLSD

Mandatory masking, along with a requirement for staff to require proof of vaccination or testing, has come to end at the Northern Lights School Division.

That’s according to a letter issued by Director of Education Jason Young, who noted the division’s COVID-19 strategy has also ceased as of Monday. It adds proper hand hygiene and sanitization will continue to be best practice for Northern Lights.

“All schools will continue to have the support and engagement of local medical health officers in responding to any public health risks in school settings, including COVID-19,” Young wrote. “These medical health officers can provide locally tailored approaches to respond to the presence of COVID-19 in school settings, should that occur, and put in place mitigation and response protocols that align with provincial standards.”

Medical health officers are currently recommending schools remain mask-friendly environments and staff and students should be encouraged to wear a mask while they are at school. Staff are also still encouraged to become vaccinated.

Staff and students should continue to monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms and stay at home if they are sick. Rapid antigen tests should also continue to be used and those who test positive should self-isolate regardless of the lack of public health orders.

“Schools should continue to monitor absenteeism and report suspected outbreaks to the Office of the Medical Health Officer, to ensure that the appropriate outbreak measures are implemented,” the letter states. “Other health measures that we know work must continue. These include hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and environmental cleaning.”
