Snow depth in La Ronge remains high with melting temperatures on the way

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang believes spring is starting to arrive in the tri-communities.

“It’s trying really hard. The 10-day weather pattern does show that it is staying above the seasonal average. That’s good news,” she said.

“The other good thing is the temperatures are sort of sneaking above the freezing mark and then going below the freezing mark at night. Although that’s not great for the roads, it is good for the snow melt because we want kind of a gradual snow melt and not a real rapid snow melt, because then everything melts away and we start running into problems that way.”

While Monday is forecasted to reach a high of -12 Celsius and a low of -15 C tonight, Tuesday is expected to be 1 C with temperatures hovering around the freezing point for the rest of the week. Wednesday should reach 0 C, followed by -1 C on Thursday and 3 C on Friday.

Average highs for this time of year for the last 30 years is -2 C and overnight lows are around -15 C.

“The overall forecast for spring is a cooler than average spring … with near seasonal precipitation,” Lang said.

There continues to be a large amount of snow on the ground in the tri-communities. At the end of February, there were 64 centimetres of snow while the 30-year average is 40.

Lang explained precipitation continues to be above average following November, December and January. La Ronge in February came in at 21 millimetres of precipitation compared to an average of 15 mm.

“La Ronge has a long way to come when it comes to melting, but I think this week will do well to get that melt going with the temperatures coming above average, plus any kind of winds speed up the melting process as well,” Lang said.
