Ice Wolves awards banquet and jersey auction scheduled for Saturday

The La Ronge Ice Wolves will be hosting their annual Year End Banquet this Saturday at Eagle Point Resort.

“It’s to give out the awards to the players like Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year and those kind of things,” said board member Randy Johns. “It’s also to recognize the players and the coaches for all that they did during the season. A lot of the players parents come, and it’s a nice chance sit around and put a cap on the season.”

Johns explained even though the Ice Wolves were knocked out of the first round of the playoffs by the Broncos, the team still had a successful run. He noted the Broncos were one of the top teams heading into the playoffs.

It will also be an emotional event as 10 players are 20-year-olds and will age out of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Johns added some will continue playing hockey and others will be pursing educational opportunities.

“It’s a big thing for them,” Johns said. “It’s usually a little bit emotional when you say goodbye to some guys. The guys who are not 20 yet, they are saying goodbye for the summer and looking forward to next year.”

Johns mentioned seating is limited and those who want to attend the banquet should purchase tickets as soon as possible. Tickets are $40 and can be bought from Lynnette Merriman by calling 1-306-425-8189.

Cocktails will start at 5 p.m. with the banquet scheduled for 6 p.m. The awards ceremony and jersey auction will follow.
