Home-based businesses topic of network meeting this week in La Ronge

La Ronge resident Matthew Maurer is inviting owners of home-based businesses or those interested in starting one to a network meet-up on Tuesday.

“The reason I thought it would be a good idea to get it going is because there’s not really much for representation for home-based businesses,” he said. “The needs of home-based businesses are a little bit different than your typical business that would be a member of the Chamber of Commerce.”

Maurer, who is in the start-up phase his own home-based business Nikik Digital Solutions, explained there’s isn’t a strong connection between such businesses in the tri-communities as owners are communicating with one another independently. As he was launching Nikik Digital Solutions, he said he spent many hours researching and reaching out to different people to find answers to his questions.

By networking together in an organized way, Maurer noted it could make that process easier and faster. He added such a group could also lean on one another for advice to find out what’s working for them and what’s not.

“The issues that they have are different than a small business that has a shop downtown because they’re not worrying about foot traffic or commercial property taxes and issues like that,” Maurer said. “I figured it would be good to have a place where anybody can go to every month and discuss their issues or opportunities of specifically being a home-based business, and also provide a way for home-based businesses to have a voice in the overall economic growth of the Lac La Ronge area.”

Forming a home-based business group could also assist in driving more customers to local services and products. Maurer mentioned much of that traffic is generated by word of mouth advertising and it is unlikely home-based businesses have a website.

Although Maurer wants to get the group going, he said it’s important those who are interested understand it will be a collective effort.

“My intention with this group is to really set the foundation for other people to build upon it,” he said. “I’m not really implying to anybody that I am in charge, I’m really telling all them ‘this us up to you guys.’ I set out guidelines and all of these rules and what not, but it is really up to [everybody] to define what this is and how this is going to turn out.”

The business network meeting will be held at the La Ronge Senior’s Club Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There are only 15 spots available and those interested in attending should register with Maurer at 1-306-420-5334.
