Completion of tiny homes in La Loche a welcome sight for residents

People are starting to move into newly built tiny homes in La Loche.

The affordable housing development targets low-income residents and include a kitchen, living room, one bedroom, a bathroom and kitchen amenities. Funding for the houses came from the federal and provincial governments, as well as a $883,000 investment from Métis Nation-Saskatchewan.

That investment accounts for six of the 20 tiny homes that were built. Twenty Métis residents of La Loche will move into those six homes by the end of April.

“Our MN–S government works hard to create partnerships to benefit our Métis citizens and communities by addressing homelessness, overcrowding and the challenges of being a single parent,” President Glenn McCallum is quoted in a media release issued April 14. “By securing safe, affordable housing, the tenants of these tiny homes and our citizens can focus on themselves, their families and their wellbeing.”

Métis Nation-Saskatchewan partnered with Métis Local #39, Methy Housing Corporation, the Village of La Loche and the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, to complete the project. Through recent virtual community engagement sessions, Métis citizens expressed a need for housing in a better state of repair and for a reasonable cost of living.

The Methy Housing Corporation (MHC) and Methy Construction and Maintenance Corporation are not-for-profits owned by the Northern Village of La Loche.

“Partnerships with the Métis Nation and other governments are the best way to get houses built in our community,” MHC manager Doug Gailey said.
