Baseball season in La Ronge begins

Another season of La Ronge and Area Minor Baseball has started with about 190 participants registered.

That’s according to club president Corey Borthwick, who said that’s about average but more than the 160 athletes who signed up in 2021. The baseball club has been in La Ronge since 2007 and Borthwick noted the most to ever register in a season was 260.

Baseball began on May 9 with age divisions in rookie, junior rally cap, senior rally cap, 11U, 13U, and 15U and 18U combined into a single division. Teams practice at Pre-Cam Community School and Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre twice per week.

“We initially wanted to start on May 5. We did push it back a few days,” Borthwick said, adding the diamonds were still wet due to snow. “It wasn’t looking like we were going to start on May 9, but we were able to.”

Borthwick explained all age divisions except for 13U will play until the season-end league tournament scheduled for June 20. The 13U team will attend one tournament in Saskatoon late this month and another in Prince Albert in June. They will also compete at provincial championships at a to be determined location in July.

Although participation rates this year are more average than 2021, Borthwick struggled to find enough volunteers to coach this season. He said that forced him to make teams larger than what the club would like.

“That usually affects the kids experience because when you have a larger team, the don’t get the ball as much and there’s less opportunities to hit and stuff like that,” Borthwick said. “That’s one of the drawbacks of it. It’s always tough to get coaches, but this year was extremely difficult.”

Borthwick mentioned the club is always looking for volunteers and anyone interested can contact them.
