June declared as Pride Month by Air Ronge council

May 27, 2022 | 3:07 PM

A resolution to proclaim June as Pride Month was carried at a regular Air Ronge council meeting earlier this week.

The proclamation states June is recognized as Pride Month in Canada and around the world as an opportunity to celebrate sexual diversity, promote equal rights and build awareness of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ2S+ community.

It notes Pride Month is an opportunity to prevent discrimination and promote acceptance and inclusion of all, and to support the development of harmonious and respectful relationships amongst all members of the community.

“The Northern Village of Air Ronge celebrates the diversity of our general and sexual minority communities including…LGBTQ2S+, and expresses a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our organization and our community,” the proclamation reads. “During Pride Month, we can all reflect on the progress made to recognize and protect the rights of LGBTQ2S+ communities, and the work that still needs to be done.”

Along with passing the proclamation, Air Ronge council also committed $750 to support Pride festivities in June and display a Pride Flag inside the village office.

At a regular town meeting two week ago, La Ronge council also decided to declare June as Pride Month and pass a proclamation. Earlier this year, the La Ronge Regional Pride Committee was awarded $1,500 through the town’s municipal grant program.

Pride Month will begin June 1 with the raising of the Pride Flag at 6 p.m. in La Ronge’s Patterson Park.
