Accessible pathway to be built at downtown beach

Jun 8, 2022 | 12:33 PM

Construction of an accessible pathway in La Ronge’s Patterson Park is expected to begin any day.

That’s according to community services manager Connor Tessier, who explained the project will be a renovation and expansion of the current walkway near the tennis courts and beach. He said the new walkway will not impact the overall size of the beach as a new stretch of path will be installed along the roadside and lead into the water.

“There’s a large number of places across the tri-community that are not accessible, so we’re taking as many steps as we can to increase the accessibility in the spaces we have within the town,” Tessier said. “This was a focus for us because there was some work to be done at the beach already. It was beneficial for us to tie in an accessible focus on it rather than just rebuilding the existing pathway and not having it accessible.”

The contract to build the pathway was awarded to Preston Trail Consulting and the project will cost an estimated $75,000. A $56,000 grant from Prairies Economic Development Canada will pay for most of the work.

The pathway itself will be built using cable concrete, which is more flexible and appropriate for sandy conditions. Cable concrete will allow for a firm platform to stand or roll on in the water.

“It’s definitely a large step for the town to invest in a large project like this with a focus on accessibility, and we are looking forward to more projects so our town can be more accessible,” Tessier said. “We’re looking at all avenues to increase accessibility. I would be open to any suggestions from the public about where they think we can increase accessibility across the town.”

Construction of the pathway is expected to take 45 days, but Tessier noted it could take longer depending on the weather and work could stretch into August.
