An RCMP officer has been placed on administrative duties pending an investigation following the review of two videos.

That’s according to an email response from Saskatchewan RCMP Media Relations, which states Saskatchewan RCMP became aware of both videos on June 13. It notes an initial review of both videos indicates these actions do not appear to be consistent with RCMP training.

This video was taken by a bystander in La Ronge and shared on social media. (Submitted video)

The officer, who RCMP haven’t named and was a relief officer for a short time with the La Ronge detachment when the videos were taken, has been placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of the Code of Conduct investigation.

The officer has since returned to his home community.

“We have since been in contact with local leadership to let them know we are aware of the incidents,” the email stated. “Local leadership were advised the Saskatchewan RCMP will review the incidents in their entirety. Information will continue to be shared with local leadership as it becomes available.”

One video taken along La Ronge Avenue begins with officers approaching two people to make an arrest. An officer tells one of the persons to get on the ground. That person then put their hands on their head, turned around and got on their knees. The officer is then recorded kicking that person in the back.

A second video that was taken at an unknown location also begins with officers making an arrest. It shows a man face down on the ground and apparently handcuffed. An officer is seen over him, who then punches him in the back of the head in front of a young child.

larongeNOW has decided not to release the second video due to explicit language.

“Transparency and accountability are critical in our role as the provincial police service,” the email noted. “The Saskatchewan RCMP appreciates the members of the public who captured this video and brought it to our attention.”
