La Ronge sets new precipitation record

Jun 16, 2022 | 1:07 PM

Climate Change and Environment Canada is reporting 50.8 millimetres of rain fell in La Ronge between Tuesday and Wednesday.

“There was a significant amount of rain that did fall over the area,” meteorologist Sara Hoffman said. “The most that fell in a single day was on June 14 when the La Ronge area reported 29.6 mm of rain.”

That was followed by another 21.2 mm of rain on June. 15. Environment Canada had issued a rainfall warning on Monday, stating a significant rainfall event was expected to bring 50 to 70 mm of rain.

Although there was a large amount of rain on those two days, neither were record-breaking as storm systems are common for this time of year. La Ronge, however, did set a new precipitation record on June 10 with 14.2 mm of rain. The previous record was 12.3 mm set in 2018.

“There has been steady rain in the La Ronge area from June 9 until today essentially,” Hoffman said. “That brings our total rainfall over the area to about 78.9 mm of rain.”

The 30-year average of rainfall for the entire month of June is 66.5 mm. That’s in contrast to May, which was eighth driest out of 57 years of records. There was only 13.6 mm of rain while the normal amount is 43.6 mm.

Environment Canada is forecasting warmer and more average temperatures this weekend. Friday and Saturday will bring a mix of sun and clouds with the temperatures being 19 C and 23 C, respectively.

“It will be quite short-lived,” Hoffman added. “We have another system poking up from the United States that will affect a pretty big swath of Saskatchewan. We will see more rain Sunday night into Monday. In particular for the La Ronge area, we will see it Monday night because it has to make its way north over the province.”
