LLRIB developing Environmental Management Plan

Jun 23, 2022 | 5:00 PM

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) is encouraging members to provide feedback in regards to an Environmental Management Plan.

According to a public announcement, the Lands and Resources department is in the early stages of developing such a plan. The band is seeking knowledge and guidance to identify environmental issues that the public would like to see addressed on LLRIB reserve lands.

“An Environmental Management Plan (EMP) is a member-driven statement of goals, actions, and strategies that a First Nation will pursue to maintain or improve environmental quality on reserves,” the announcement stated.

In specific, there are eight questions the band would like members to answer. Those questions include any environmental concerns, issues, or impacted/polluted areas on reserve lands that need to be addressed, as well as specific aspects of the environment or areas on reserve that are not currently impacted but are at risk of being impacted.

The LLRIB would also like to know of any traditional or cultural values, practices, language, or teachings that members would like to see included in the EMP, which could help protect lands, natural resources and people.

“We need your help in developing this plan,” the release stated. “The EMP is for all the people of LLRIB. LLRIB leadership and the Lands and Resources department are looking to you for guidance on how best to share information and seek input from membership about environmental goals and actions and how to implement those actions in the future.”

Those who would like to participate in providing feedback can find a form to do so online here. Completed feedback forms must be submitted on or before Aug. 31.
