La Ronge wraps up Pride Month with parade and festival

Jun 27, 2022 | 5:00 PM

There was no lack of support in the tri-communities for Pride in the Park and other associated events in June.

“The weekend was fantastic,” said La Ronge Mayor and Lac La Ronge Regional Pride Committee member Colin Ratushniak. “I think the whole month was a success for our community with the six events that we had going on. Yesterday, the weather couldn’t have been any better than it was.”

Some of the most recent events included a diversity service held at the United Church on Saturday afternoon followed by an adult-only YXE Drag Collective show that night at The Lands. Festivities on Sunday started with a Pride Parade along La Ronge Avenue at 10:15 a.m. and then four hours of entertainment with Pride in the Park beginning at noon.

Not counting spectators, Ratushniak estimates 200 people participated in the Pride Parade and 500 people went through Patterson Park that afternoon. It featured a free barbecue, face painting, a fortune teller, home-based vendors, drag queen performances, as well as many local musicians.

He noted the committee received support through a grant from Canadian Heritage, along with 48 mainly tri-community sponsors.

“I think it is always awesome to expose people to new art and just for people to come out and have a good time,” he said. “If there is one thing about the pandemic that we learned is just being able to connect with each other, and go out and have a good time and a laugh and don’t take things too seriously. That’s what those events are about.”

Earlier events this month included a Trivia Night at Kostas and the Pride Flag raising on June 1.
