Tri-community summer programming popular among youth

Jul 7, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Summer camps and programs in the tri-communities are proving to be popular with children and youth.

The TD Summer Reading Program at La Ronge’s Alex Robertson Public Library is underway and administrator Sean Stares explained there are 15 people on the waiting list. It runs Monday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Stares noted he didn’t need to advertise it because it’s so popular.

“There is a lot of demand in the community right now for these programs,” adding participants are between five to 11 years old. “They get a story time and then free reading. They go out and they play games outside and then they come in and they do a craft and do some more free reading.”

The TD Summer Reading Program began July 4 and continues until Aug. 19.

The Northern Village of Air Ronge is hosting summer programming for those between the ages of five and 17. It also started July 4 and it has an end date of Aug. 26.

Participants five to 11 years old attend from 10 a.m. to noon, while everyone older goes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Karriele Charles and Shaylene Martin were hired as coordinators.

“With the younger kids, we do about 60 minutes of exercise with them and then we do crafts,” Charles said, adding the afternoon is similar but age appropriate. “We provide snacks as they are doing their crafts. Depending on the week we are doing, we teach them about different things.”

Some of the themed weeks (Monday to Friday) include science, water, woodworking, gardening and the environment. Registration for the program is still open and Charles mentioned plenty of spots are open in the afternoons.

La Ronge’s Pre-Cam Community School is set to operate a summer literacy camp from July 11-29 from Monday to Friday. The camps will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and participants will be given free snacks and books. Residents are encouraged to attend and read with their child or send them on their own.

The University of Saskatchewan will host science camps at Pre-Cam and Bell’s Point Elementary School from July 18-22. Registration for the camp at Pre-Cam has already closed.
