Eighteen individuals from northern Saskatchewan were in La Ronge on Sunday for a very rare medal ceremony.

Lt. Gov. Russ Mirasty presented Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medals as part of the late monarch’s celebration of 70 years on the throne. The ceremony occurred at Eagle Point Resort.

“Some people would say that was her job, that’s what she was born into and its true, but at the same time, to carry on for 70 years is absolutely incredible,” he told attendees. “When we start to think about the medal I will present today, there’s a lot of meaning attached to that.”

Mirasty explained those who receive the medal have contributed or supported their communities in some way.

The recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal are Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation chief Karen Bird, Lac La Ronge Indian Band chief Tammy Cook-Searson and Prince Albert Grand Council chief Brian Hardlotte.
