Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee meets for first time

Members of the new Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee met for the first time Thursday.

The inaugural meeting was held at 4 p.m. at the La Ronge town office and it included introductions, as well as a presentation from consulting firm Scatliff+Miller+Murray. Sheldon Merriman was named chairperson of the committee and La Ronge Coun. Abby Besharah is vice-chairperson.

Other members of the committee are Tania Colbert, Deepan Dasgupta, Judy Hanke, Colin Jolly, deputy-mayor Viviana Ruiz Arcand, Ty Roberts, and Adam Kolberg. With the exception of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and Lac La Ronge Chamber of Commerce, which were both asked to send representatives, all other members volunteered on their own accord.

The committee will work with Scatliff+Miller+Murray to develop a Downtown Revitalization Plan that is reflective of La Ronge’s geographic uniqueness and representative of the town’s cooperative relationship with the band and Air Ronge.

“The town’s downtown is home to a range of businesses, as well as key industry and government headquarters, including mining companies and airlines,” a proposal from the consulting firm states. “The downtown is also well-positioned to take advantage of exciting opportunities for development, such as a new marina and business operation related to it, and the revitalization of the waterfront and other urban and natural spaces.”

Phase one of the proposed work plan will include project initiation and a background review. That will involve guidance and vision meetings, a site visit and tour, and the development of a study and report.

The second phase will include community stakeholder meetings and the creation of a feedback and direction report. The third phase would be the actual development of the Downtown Revitalization Plan.

“Assuming the work commences September 2022, we aim to have the final deliverables completed and ready for public viewing by the end of February 2023,” the proposal states.

Scatliff+Miller+Murray estimates the cost of such a plan to be $61,000 not including taxes.
