Roberts makes SJHL debut

It was a rather special night for sixteen-year-old Sage Roberts, who joined the Ice Wolves on Friday for a home game against the Melfort Mustangs.

Roberts is on the Ice Wolves protective list and he was asked to participate in Friday’s game because the team was short one player due to injuries. It was the first time he took part in a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) game as he currently plays with the Indigenous Sports Academy’s U17 Eagles.

Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski explained it was a proud moment for Roberts as he also scored his first SJHL goal during the third period.

“Sage was an Ice Wolves fan big time when he was growing up and I think it is pretty special to have the opportunity to don the Ice Wolves sweater, play in front of your hometown and also score a goal,” Kaminski said. “He enjoyed himself. He was all smiles after the game, and it was just so nice to see dreams do come true.”

The Ice Wolves ultimately won 7-2 against the Mustangs with four goals secured in the first and three more in the third. The team is now on the road for four away games, which includes a stop Oct. 11 in Humboldt. So far, the Ice Wolves have played the Broncos three times and lost each time.

“I think the boys have a lot of confidence going into tonight after the game against Melfort,” Kaminski said. “It’s just a matter of adjusting and believing that the system works and believing in themselves that they got to bring their best game and what got them here.”

After Humboldt, they will play games in Yorkton (Oct. 12), Melville (Oct. 14), and Yorkton (Oct. 15). Following a 10-game suspension from the SJHL, Kaminski will officially be back on the bench Wednesday.

Since Sept. 16, Kaminski was barred from attending games and he was forced to watch them from home.

“It’s been a great experience for Kyle Schneider to take over and he has done one heck of a job with this team,” Kaminski said. “We move on and, as a hockey person, I love and have the passion and the heart big time for the game. We need to take care of business tonight in Humboldt and get prepared for Yorkton.”
