Halloween will be the last day for above seasonal temperatures in the La Ronge area as cold conditions and snow are forecasted later this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is expecting a high of 6 C for Halloween in La Ronge with a mix of sun and cloud and an overnight low of -2 C. Normal temperatures for this time of year is a daytime high of 0 C and lows -8 C.

Meteorologist Kyle Fougere explained the weather this week will change drastically as a low-pressure system moves over Saskatchewan from Montana.

“This whole month of October has been above seasonal in the La Ronge area,” he said. “There was a lot of days with temperatures in the double digits, which is unusual for this time of year.”

Snow will begin to fall on Tuesday evening with five to 10 centimeters expected overnight. Periods of snow will continue into Wednesday with up to another 10 cm possible by Thursday morning.

Temperatures will be colder throughout the week and be more seasonal in nature. Fougere noted more snow is possible on the weekend with Sunday reaching a high of -9 C.

“We’re going to be updating the forecast as we get a little bit nearer and possibly even issuing some warnings,” he said. “For the amounts that we’re looking at, I do think it’s likely it will stick around on the ground. It is going to start off a little bit wetter and it could even start with rain mixed with snow with some freezing rain mixed in there, but with the amounts we are expecting to occur overnight, it is likely there will be some accumulations with it.”

Those travelling this week are encouraged to check the Hotline Highway for road conditions and to check the forecast for weather conditions. Fougere mentioned now is a good time to be ready for the snowy weather and that motorists should switch to winter tires if they have them.
