Former NHLer set to speak at Ice Wolves Sportsman Dinner

Nov 3, 2022 | 2:28 PM

Former NHLer Eric Gryba has been invited to La Ronge to speak at the annual Ice Wolves Sportsman Dinner next week.

Gryba, who was born and raised in Saskatoon, made his NHL debut in February 2013 with the Ottawa Senators who he played with for three seasons. He spent another three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before finishing his career in 2019 with the New Jersey Devils.

The defenseman has a record of seven goals, 36 assists, and 43 points out of 289 games. He has a total of 368 penalty minutes.

“I will be talking about how I made it to the NHL, the path I took, some of the adversities I’ve overcome, and some of the success I had making it to the NHL and making it in the NHL,” Gryba said about his upcoming visit.

“It’s going to be a wide variety of things. I’ll be answering any questions from all the people there. I am an open canvas. If someone has a question whether it be McDavid or Draisaitl or anything else about someone I’ve played with.”

Gryba, who returned to Saskatoon following his retirement from the NHL, is also an avid outdoorsman and he will spend some time talking about some of the trips he’s been on as well. He has been to La Ronge in the past, but he was only travelling through on his way to fishing expeditions.

“I have some pretty funny hunting stories that actually correlate with hockey,” Gryba said.

The Sportsman Dinner will be held Nov. 12 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. There will be a jersey auction, silent auction, and a performance by hypnotist JR Matthew. Tickets are $60 each and can be purchased from Rita Goertzen.

The Ice Wolves are also hosting the Kelly Taylor Comedy Show on Nov. 9 in the Wolves Den. That show will occur after the Ice Wolves play against the Kindersley Klippers at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

The Ice Wolves next play in Nipawin on Friday before returning to La Ronge for six homes games in row between Nov. 8 to Nov. 19. They currently have a record of 10 wins and seven losses in 17 games. The Ice Wolves rank fourth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League as of Nov. 3.
