Tri-community residents honour veterans in many ways
The sacrifices made by those who served in Canada’s military have not been forgotten by tri-community residents this week.
Indigenous Veterans Day was observed on Tuesday as a way to pay tribute to the thousands of Indigenous, Inuit and Métis people who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
In honour of the day, the Ice Wolves opened their home game against the Kindersley Klippers with the singing of O’ Canada in Cree by Joree Delaney. That was followed by a ceremonial puck drop by Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) veteran Irwin Hennie.
La Ronge’s Pre-Cam Community School also observed Indigenous Veterans Day by hosting a special ceremony in the gymnasium. It was attended by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 371 President Shaune Lapworth, LLRIB Chief Tammy Cook-Searson and Métis Nation–Saskatchewan regional representative Laura Burnouf.
