Council considers adding railings at Mel Hegland Uniplex

Town council has directed administration to look into the cost of installing railings along the stands at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

The enhancement is being considered after council reviewed a letter sent by resident Don Prokop at a regular council meeting last week. Prokop wrote to council asking if railings can be placed between the rows to give fans something to hold on when walking up and down the stairs.

“I have been an Ice Wolves season ticket holder for a long time,” Prokop wrote. “I have never had problems getting up the few stairs to get to my seat. Now, I have a leg problem on my left side and have difficulty climbing these stairs. I have to hold on to the back of the seats to get to my seat. I also know others who are in the same situation.”

larongeNOW was unable to reach Prokop for further details, but Mayor Joe Hordyski explained council decided to send the request to administration to determine the cost.

“We are definitely going to look at it and come up with a plan on that,” he said. “More than likely we wouldn’t do the whole facility. We might do a section.”

Hordyski mentioned fans with mobility issues need to consider the seats at the bottom of the stands as well, even though those spots might not have the best views for the game.

“We’re analyzing the needs of that facility and trying to see how that would affect the budget,” he said. “We’re having a public meeting coming up here shortly and some of that may come out at the public meeting in terms of what the plans are for the rink.”
