La Ronge capital plan calls for nearly $20 million in spending by 2026

Residents of La Ronge are invited to an open house meeting with council this week regarding the 2023 operating budget and 10-year capital plan.

“It’s certainly open to anyone who’s interested, but the idea is to provide residents and taxpayers with some information about [what’s] proposed in the budget, how it is it to be funded and also an opportunity to look at some long-term capital plans,” Chief Administrative Officer Lyle Hannan said. “It’s something we’re hoping to share and get some feedback on from residents.”

There are a number of big ticket items council will need to consider and prioritize. For instance, a new hockey and curling facility is estimated to cost $34 million, a new wastewater treatment plant is $15.8 million and the economic corridor plan will cost $8 million. There’s also costs to consider when it comes to the recently launched downtown revitalization project, as well as the open spaces and trails master plan.

“Normally, the bulk of the budget work is ultimately prepared by staff with council inputting guidance,” Hannan said.

“Often with municipalities, they want to share with the public. It gives the public opportunity to express any concerns and, probably more importantly, educates them if they have questions about the budget or why things are going up or what initiatives are in the works for the next year or down the road. It’s just a good opportunity to engage with the communities and give them that information.”

More information about the 10-year capital plan can be found online here. It calls for nearly $20 million worth of investments by the end of 2025 with $10 million for Mel Hegland Uniplex upgrades, $4 million for the economic corridor initiative and $2.5 million for downtown revitalization.

The open house will be held Dec. 6 at the town office. There will be two sessions with the first from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the second from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
