Local dance club hosts showcase, screens mini documentary

It was an evening of entertainment for those who attended the Tri-Community Dance Club’s Showcase and mini-documentary screening on Saturday at La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School.

The showcase featured 55 dancers and was meant to be a performance of what they’ve learned during the past few months. The mini-documentary called The Circle Unites Us is a short film about hip-hop and hoop-dancing workshop held in August.

“The showcase of the dancers was fantastic,” board member Camille Galloway said. “It is incredible how much these dancers have learned in such a short period. A lot of them are brand new dancers this year and, just within the last three months, it has been incredible to see how much they are taking to this.”

Galloway explained during the workshop in August, two instructors worked with 50 participants on hip-hop and hoop dancing skills. For the first three days, they had to a chance to work with the instructors individually and, on the final day, the dancers learned to fuse the two styles together.

“What we wanted to do was weave a story through video at the end,” she said. “The premiere itself was really well received. We’re going to be releasing it online at some point, we’re just kind of working out the details for that. We will be sharing it publicly down the road, we’re just not quite there yet.”

The Tri-Community Dance Club begins another session in January and registration is currently open on the group’s website. Galloway noted participants learn not only skills but are given a well-rounded education about what dance is about.

“There’s teaching, there’s history, where did the dances come from and what are the lesson behind the movements, what are the significance of the movements, that kind of stuff,” she said.
