Budget for 2023 calls for higher garbage collection fees in La Ronge

Dec 14, 2022 | 4:49 PM

Residents of La Ronge who receive regular garbage collection from the municipality will pay more for the service in 2023.

The rate hike was approved at a regular council meeting Tuesday as part of the town’s 2023 operational and capital budgets. There are no new taxes or increases to water and sewer rates, but the cost for waste management will go up.

Chief administrative officer Lyle Hannan explained a single-family home that pays $10 per month will now pay $22, or an additional $144 per year.

“Now we are going to introduce a two-tiered fee where those that get collection services will pay more than those who are just paying the base rate,” he said, noting those who pay for private garbage services will only pay an additional $20 on the base rate per year.

Projected revenue in the 2023 operating budget is $7.3 million with $4.5 million coming through in taxes and $1.4 million in utilities.

The 2023 capital plan calls for $18.5 million in spending with $11 million coming from grants, $6.6 million from reserves, $500,000 from land sales, and $335,000 from tri-community partner contributions. All of the grant money acquired is earmarked for the La Ronge Airport.

From reserve spending, $3.6 million will be directed towards upgrades at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Another $1.1 million will be spent on machinery and equipment like a new grader and sweeper, while $130,000 will be spent on the new Robertson Park Green Space, $125,000 for downtown revitalization, and $100,000 for the Highway 102 economic corridor.

La Ronge council recently passed a 10-year capital plan that calls for millions in borrowing and dipping into the town’s reserve fund. Read more online here.
