Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -24 C in La Ronge on Christmas Day.

“On Christmas morning, lows will be -26 C to -28 C,” said meteorologist Brian Proctor. “There will be some moderation of temperature through the day, but not particularly warm or anything in that nature.”

Thursday, Friday and Saturday are all expected to be sunny with daytime highs of -24 C, -26 C and -19 C, respectively. It will be particularly cold Thursday night with a low of -33 C.

The average high for this time of year is -14 C during the day and -24 C at night.

“There’s not going to be a whole lot of wind at this point in time either, so it should be a reasonable period of weather,” Proctor said about the lead up to Christmas. “I think most of the active weather is going to go south of the area.”

Proctor noted conditions will become more unsettled around Boxing Day with cloudy skies and flurries expected Dec. 26 and 27. Warmer temperatures are also on the way with the daytime high forecasted to be -19 C next Tuesday.

“There’s no real consensus for what we are looking at, but I would say light snowfall,” Proctor said. “Not huge accumulations at this point in time.”

Although there is no significant weather events in the forecast, Proctor explained it is still important motorists carry an emergency kit and check the Highway Hotline before travelling this holiday season.
