Langhorne featured in new Indigenous art exhibit in La Ronge

Paintings by Air Ronge artist Donna Langhorne are included in a new art exhibit on display at Mistasinihk Place.

The exhibit is called Tepakohp (ᑌᐸᑯᐦᑊ) and it is in honor of the principles of seven and the Indigenous artists that helped shape contemporary Indigenous art in Canada. Tepakohp (ᑌᐸᑯᐦᑊ) is the Néhiyaw word for seven and it has deep significance for Indigenous communities throughout the world.

Others included in the exhibit are Audie Murray, Mary Friesen, Larissa Kitchemonia, Stacey Fayant, Brandy Jones, and Melanie Monique Rose (curator).

“When Melanie Monique Rose approached me with the idea to become one of the seven for this exhibition was very exciting for me,” Langhorne, who is known professionally as Donna The Strange, said.

“I look up to the original Indigenous group of seven which included Jackson Beardy, Eddy Cobiness, Alex Janvier, Norval Morrisseau, Daphne Odjig, Carl Ray and Joseph Sanchez. They paved the way for us Indigenous artists, and now a new group of Indigenous female artists are doing the same. It is an honour to be asked and be apart of this, and for my hometown to be able to witness this.”

She also explained she’s excited for the public to see her painting entitled The Everlasting North, which is her first Anishinaabe Woodland style painting she ever created.

The painting was inspired by Norval’s artwork. He is known as the father and founder of the woodland style art form.

Other artwork she has in the exhibit are a woodland fish painting inspired by the spawning of the suckers at Bigstone every spring where many families gather to catch and release, as well as a painting of a white-tailed deer hybrid. The hybrid is two styles colliding together into one with the styles being Anishinaabe Woodland style and realism.

The exhibit will be on display for the month of January.
