Tri-community murals to celebrate togetherness during COVID-19 pandemic

On behalf of the Tri-Community Celebration Committee, the Town of La Ronge is seeking proposals from interested local artists for the installation of three commemorative murals.

A request for proposals opened earlier this week for those who want to put their name forward to complete the $40,000 project. That total would cover the artist’s fees, materials, fabrication, and on-site installation.

The murals will likely be placed at the exterior fence at the La Ronge Water Treatment Plant, exterior wall at the Village of Air Ronge office, and interior wall inside the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. Those locations can be changed, however, with creative input from the artist hired.

“We’re really inviting local artists. We do want this to be a local artist that we select,” project coordinator Michael Fraser said. “That’s one of the main goals is that it’s a tri-community artist that does these because we are celebrating our tri-community.”

Funding for the project was made possible through the federal government’s Celebration and Commemoration Program’s Reopening Fund. The theme of all three murals will be “emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic as a tri-community,” and will commemorate the three communities coming together during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vision of the Tri-Community Celebration Committee is that the proposed work will reflect the diverse community, invite interaction, foster civic identity and community pride, reflect the local natural and cultural history, inspires a sense of discovery, and stimulates cultural awareness. Murals must be appropriate for an inclusive, family-friendly environment and contain no commercial imagery or logos.

“The intent is that the murals are equivalent,” Fraser said. “That they all contribute to the whole art installation like they are equal and similar in size.”

Proposals will be accepted by the municipality until Feb. 6 and the project must be completed by Aug. 31.
