Warm temperatures in La Ronge expected to linger

Feb 6, 2023 | 4:55 PM

Warm temperatures are expected to continue in La Ronge until the weekend.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang, who said the above-average temperatures in recent days is due to warm air from the Pacific Ocean moving through Saskatchewan.

On Sunday, it reached a high of 5 C in La Ronge, but it was not record-breaking. The record of 6 C was set in 1991.

“The 30-year average for this time of year are highs of -11 C and overnight lows around -23 C, so we will start getting closer towards those at the end of the week,” Lang said.

“There is some snow forecasted for La Ronge coming through. There’s the one system going through today, there’s another system going through overnight tonight and into tomorrow and La Ronge will probably get some snow there too. The third system is on Wednesday and that’s the one that has the more colder air associated with it. That one is going through the south, so you probably won’t get too much of that.”

Environment Canada forecasted a high of -10 C for La Ronge and an overnight low of -14 C. There’s a 30 per cent chance of snow or rain on Tuesday with a high of 5 C and low of -10 C.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are all expected to have highs of -2 C. Wednesday and Thursday should be sunny, while clouds move in on Friday and will stick around through the weekend.

This winter has so far been unseasonably warm with La Ronge having the fourth warmest January in 58 years of record keeping. The average temperature last month was -12.7 C while the normal temperature for January is -18.8 C.

“We’re getting differing answers when it comes to the long-range forecast. Initially the forecast said it was going to be a colder than average February, which is consistent with a La Niña pattern,” Lang said.

“When I look into the long-range forecast, which is about 10 days, it’s still keeping most of the province in relatively warm conditions and then towards the end it looks like it is turning colder. It doesn’t look like outrageously cold weather. It looks like regular winter weather, so that forecast of it being below average for the month of February, I don’t know if that is going to pan out or not.”

With freezing and thaw occurring during the day and night, Lang recommends motorists check the Highway Hotline before heading out.
