Land and animals focus of new art exhibit in La Ronge

A new art exhibit at La Ronge’s Mistasinihk Place celebrates the land and animals in northern Saskatchewan.

Designed by Nature is a collection of work completed by Annalisa Heppner and Brandon White, who are both from La Ronge. While Heppner’s work is mainly done with acrylic paints, White’s contribution is a series of digital photos printed on a variety of backgrounds like canvas or metal.

For Heppner, the exhibit marks the first time she had arrange such a showing in 10 years.

“My kids are young, but they are getting a little older. They are six and four, so I am finding there is more time for me to focus on my art,” she said.

“I was involved in a couple of community projects over the year that really sparked this surge in creating for me. Also meeting Brandon. We really clicked creatively, so that was a big influence on a lot of the work in this show.”

Heppner explained she really wanted to show her point of view on local land and animals through art. She said those who view the collection should take it all in, enjoy the colours and know all the animals can be found in nature in this area.

Heppner also invited White to create the exhibit with her. She said after getting to know him through the Healthy Dogs, Healthy Communities project, they became friends and realized their interest in art worked well together.

“I just wanted to support Annalisa because she is such an amazing friend and person,” White noted about accepting her offer. “The more we worked together as friends, I digitized some of her art for prints and stuff, I realized we do share a lot of the same themes and it felt like a really good fit.”

White has photos on display taken between 2015 and 2022, which spans the time since he began taking photos. He mentioned the photos are printed on a variety of mediums like pressed board or brushed aluminum. His printed work on metal gives the illusion of stained glass or gives water a real appearance when the light catches it just right.

For those viewing the exhibit, White said people should keep in mind their relationship with nature, how they interact with it and how they honour that relationship.

“We can all do more to clean up the Earth and make it habitable for all these great animals,” he said.

Designed by Nature will be on display for the month of February.
