Fish for free on Family Day this February

Family Day is Feb. 20 in Saskatchewan, and families who wish to do some ice fishing together can do so for free all weekend.

The free fishing weekend runs Feb. 18-20, and all residents can fish without needing to buy a fishing licence.

Fishing is free on all provincial bodies on water outside of national parks throughout the long weekend, but all other regulations — including limits — still apply.

“We have world class fishing in Saskatchewan, and we don’t let the cold temperatures prevent us from taking full advantage of it,” Dana Skoropad, Saskatchewan’s environment minister, said in a statement.

“Free fishing weekend is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at one of our province’s favourite pastimes.”

Anyone heading out onto the ice was advised to keep safety in mind. The ministry advised wearing warm clothing, and being aware of ice thickness.

“You need at least 10 (centimetres) of good ice to walk safely and at least 30 cm of good ice to travel in a light vehicle,” the ministry noted.
