SSR Mining holds public meetings to build social management plan

Feb 16, 2023 | 5:18 PM

SSR Mining Inc., the operator and owner of Seabee Gold Mine, hosted two public engagement events this week to assist in creating its social management plan.

“The purpose of these events is we want to get out into the communities and get some feedback on how we are doing with our operations,” said environmental coordinator and community relations liaison Amanda Smith.

“By getting that feedback from the communities, we can work on our social management plans. That’s our recruitment plans, our procurement plans, our community investment plans, so that’s kind of the intent of our workshop.”

Smith explained the tri-communities are a major hub for the operations at the Seabee Gold Mine, located approximately 125 kilometres northeast of La Ronge. Aside from a large number of employees flying to work out of the La Ronge Airport, she noted the company builds an ice road every winter and a year’s worth of supplies are trucked to the site through the town.

Smith also mentioned northern Saskatchewan as a whole is important to the company. She said about 25 per cent of Seabee employees come from that region.

“We are committed to making positive impacts in the communities that we are working around and I think this is a really great way to do that to get the feedback from the communities,” Smith said. “We want to make sure we are having positive contributions in the communities where we are working.”

Although Seabee is a rather remote mine site and not in the vicinity of any communities, Smith added there are many land users in the area. Another purpose of the meeting is to hear from those land users, so the company can ensure operations don’t impact them.

Aside from the public meeting Wednesday in La Ronge, a second meeting was held Thursday in Stanley Mission from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the band hall. Those who can’t make it to an event can find information on how to provide input on the SSR Mining – Seabee Gold Operations Facebook page.

“We will be compiling a social management plan,” Smith said. “Recommendations will be made based on the input that we get from the community, so we do plan on doing some more workshops once we get that information. We don’t have any dates, but probably later this year we will probably schedule some more workshops.”
