Team Saskatchewan began day six of the Canada Winter Games in P.E.I. on the podium.

Saskatoon’s Bon Lowe finished 2nd in the men’s 5,000-m long track speed skating event in Halifax Thursday morning. After a Quebec skater was disqualified, Luca Veeman, also from Saskatoon, moved up from 4th place to capture a bronze medal in the event.

“He just killed it today,” said coach Tim Comfort of Lowe. “Everyone is so happy for Bon and (he) is flying high. (Bon) worked so hard and he’s such a likeable kid. He went out there and just willed it to happen.”

On day five, Hanna Rugg and her Regina curling rink got past Team Ontario and is headed to the quarter finals.

The women’s ringette team is also heading to quarter final action. They meet News Brunswick Thursday afternoon.

In Karate (Kumite– 59 kg female) action, Melfort’s Taylor Downey competed in four bouts but did not pick up a victory. She finished tied for 9th with Anika Tran of Saskatoon.

Wheelchair basketball athlete Jordan Bortis of Saskatoon had a game high 18 points for Saskatchewan, while Regina’s Eli Corpuz had 13 in a 55-27 win over Newfoundland. The team faces Alberta in the quarter final.

The men’s hockey team finished first in their pool and enjoyed a day off Wednesday before quarter-final play begins against Nova Scotia.
