One home game left for Ice Wolves before playoffs

Feb 27, 2023 | 4:37 PM

There are only three regular season games left for the La Ronge Ice Wolves before playoffs begin in March.

The team most recently played back-to-back games against the Melfort Mustangs on Feb. 24 and 25. The first game was held at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, where the Ice Wolves won 4-2.

The following night at La Ronge’s Mel Hegland Uniplex, however, didn’t go as planned for the Ice Wolves as they lost 4-3.

“I thought it was a good weekend,” Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski said. “It was like a playoff atmosphere and, unfortunately, we just came up a little short on Saturday night.”

La Ronge and Melfort are neck-and-neck in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings as La Ronge has 65 points and Melfort has 64 for fourth and fifth place, respectively. The two teams will play each other again in Melfort on Friday.

“I think that’s who we are going to be playing,” Kaminski said about the upcoming playoffs. “The only thing is that both teams are fighting for home ice advantage. I think one team will be fourth, one team will be fifth. We’ve got three games, they’ve got five, so obviously on Friday we need to win for sure.”

The last two games are back-to-back against the Flin Flon Bombers. The first of which on March 10 will occur in La Ronge with the second on March 11 being in Flin Flon. They are currently third in the standings with 71 points.

Looking back at the season, Kaminski mentioned he’s proud of the what the team has been able to accomplish.

“I think we played pretty consistent hockey throughout the year,” he said.

“A few little ups and downs, but we’ve had some very good stretches as well. I guess the last southern trip, we lost to a few teams below us, which kind of hurt us in the standings, but you have to fight through adversity these last three games and then it’s about playoffs.”
