Lac La Ronge Winter Festival attracting large crowds

The Lac La Ronge Winter Festival is well underway and events have been well attended so far.

That’s according to Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) director of sports and recreation Kevin Roberts. Festivities began Feb. 24 with a Family Fun Night and the Festival Queen Crowning, which went to Dawn Marie McKenzie of Sucker River.

The Tracker Tom Charles Memorial Junior Trapper Competition occurred over the weekend with Robin Clinton taking first in the male category and Serena Cook taking first in the female category. Both went away with $300 in prize money.

The 14th Annual “Moochacheech” Memorial Jackfish Derby took place on Bigstone Lake on Sunday. There were approximately 190 registrants, and the top prizes went to James Ratt ($2,500), Arthur Venne ($2,000) and Paul S.D. Charles ($1,500).

Other events over the weekend included a broomball tournament where the Eagles came in first and earned a $1,200 prize. Darryl C Bird and Elmer Isbister were the winners of the Peter Ross Memorial Crib Tournament and took home $660.

Tuesday’s events include a Disco on the Ice Family Skate Night and Family Movie Night at the JRMCC. Skating is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., then a movie will start at that time and end at 9:30 p.m.

A Jigging/Square Dancing Competition will be held on Wednesday, along with the Council Cup Lac La Ronge Indian Band Staff Broomball Challenge. A talent show for youth and the Battle of the Bellies Charity Hockey Game will be held Thursday.

In the 11th annual Jimmy Roberts Memorial Hockey Tournament starting Friday, there are nine teams registered in the recreation division and four teams in the master’s division. In total, $13,600 will be awarded in prize money in that event.

“Unfortunately for the women’s division, we just didn’t have enough to make a go of it,” Roberts said. “We had some teams interested, but we wanted a minimum amount of teams to make it a go and we couldn’t quite get to the four-team limit.”

The Winter Classic Texas Hold’em Tournament on Friday will have a $15,000 payout. Other events this weekend are the 10^th annual Chrissy Charles Memorial Volleyball Tournament, the Tracker Tom Charles Memorial King and Queen Trapper Competition and the fundraiser cabaret.

The cabaret, which features performances by Happy Hour, Last Call and Half Seas Over, is already sold out.
