LLRIB provides update on agricultural benefits claim

Mar 6, 2023 | 5:00 PM

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) has provided an update on its agricultural benefits claim also known as cows and plows.

According to an announcement on Monday, the Agricultural Benefits Committee (ABC) continues to meet with legal counsel, Thompson, Laboucan & Epp LLP, in its effort to reach a timely and successful resolution of LLRIB’s claim.

In-person negotiation meetings were held with the federal government in December 2022 and, at that time, it was indicated they were ready to begin substantive negotiations which would resolve the band’s outstanding claim.

“While ABC was hopeful that these substantive negotiations would have already started, we have been recently informed that Canada is not yet ready to start talks,” the statement noted. “This could delay negotiations for several weeks, if not months.”

As the 2023 LLRIB elections are approaching, all council business will be tabled until after the election takes place. The election will not have an impact on the agricultural benefits claim, as council is still waiting for the federal government to make its own internal preparations for negotiations.

ABC is aware of certain misinformation with respect to the agricultural benefits claim circulating on social media and the public is advised that no Treaty 6 First Nation has settled its claim for agricultural benefits and Canada is still planning to negotiate a settlement with LLRIB.

When the federal government does make a settlement offer, LLRIB members will get a chance to vote on the settlement. Legal counsel will continue to update ABC and LLRIB council as new information becomes available.
