Saskaloppet attracts skiers from across the province

Mar 6, 2023 | 2:10 PM

Skiers from across the province met in La Ronge on the weekend for the annual Don Allen Saskaloppet.

“In the end we had about 280 signed up, so we were really happy with that,” said organizer Nichole Robinson. “From what I heard in year’s past, we did get up to 300 and we’re trying to get back to that number. I think COVID was the main impactor of that, [but] that’s well over 100 more than last year.”

Skiers came from across northern Saskatchewan, as well as cities such as Regina and Saskatoon. Most of the races were held on Saturday with long distance skiers finishing on Sunday.

In total, there were nine races spanning two kilometers, five km, seven km, 12 km, 20 km, 35 km, 50 km, 55 km and 75 km. The seven-km race was new this year and among the competitors was 91-year-old Peter Knudsen.

“Cross-country skiing, we talk about it being this lifelong sport and I think he’s such a good example of that,” Robinson said.

“He was saying he’s just here for the hot chocolate and chili and stuff. He’s for sure an inspiration to all the young skiers and even adults like just keeping active and how healthy it is for you. It was pretty incredible. There was a good crowd cheering him into the finish.”

The daytime high for Saturday and Sunday was around -16 C, which was a bit colder than organizers initially anticipated. Robinson noted near the end of the day on Saturday the wind picked up and the skiers participating in the longer races had a tough finish.

Snow conditions, however, were good and Robinson added the skiers were able to move fast.

“Overall, we had close to 80 volunteers and it was just incredible,” she said. “Not only did we have that huge number of skiers, people were really thankful for all the volunteers. It’s just an incredible community we have here, so it was a great day.”
