Mustangs tie series 2-2 with Ice Wolves

Mar 23, 2023 | 3:02 PM

A 3-1 loss for the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Thursday to the Melfort Mustangs means the best of seven series in now tied at 2-2.

“We had a slow start, but after that, I thought we played really well,” said Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski. “We missed a breakaway, we missed a penalty shot. I thought we moved the puck really well on the powerplay. We had probably about 10 Grade A scoring chances, unfortunately, it was just one of those nights.”

Mustangs’ Hayden Tuba scored the first goal of the night in the first period. The second period went by scoreless, but the Ice Wolves’ Trenton Curtis tied the game quickly in the third. Two more goals from the Mustangs by Cameron Emigh and Aidyn Hutchinson, however, secured the win for that team.

Shots on net was 35 for the Mustangs and 29 for the Ice Wolves.

Both Game 3 and 4 were held at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre due to an ice issue at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. The issue seems to have been resolved and Game 6 has been scheduled for the Mel for Sunday at 5 p.m.

“You always want to play at your home ice,” Kaminski said.

“It was kind of like an away game for us, as well, besides the great fan support, but hats off to Kevin Roberts and his staff for accommodating us and letting us play at the J.R. It was a little bit of chaos, a quick turn around to get to the other rink, but we did it.”

The Ice Wolves leave for Melfort this evening as Game 5 will occur Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace. Kaminski noted he will go over some notes with the players, but between now and the game tomorrow they will rest.

“This time of year right now, you have to rest the body, you have to get prepared mentally and physically and be ready to go,” he said. “There’s no sense having ice right now. The guys are tired, so tomorrow will be a team stretch, get limbered up and get ready for the game Friday evening.”

Game 7, if necessary, will be held March 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Melfort’s Northern Lights Palace.
