LLRIB recounts delaying release of election results

A recount of votes has delayed the official release of winners in the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) general election.

That’s according to electoral officer Milton Burns, who told larongeNOW two recounts needed to be done as of Monday afternoon. There was no update on why the recounts were requested or which candidates were under closer scrutiny.

The general election happened on March 30, but online voting and advance voting were also options available in the lead-up to that date. Tammy Cook-Searson declared herself the winning candidate for Chief on March 31.

“I am really grateful for the continued support and I am deeply honoured to be re-elected for the seventh time for the LLRIB,” she said. “It’s a really great feeling and I am so grateful for all the supporters and the ones who came out. Democracy is alive and well within the LLRIB.”

Cook-Searson explained there is a two-week appeal period and then there will be a swearing-in ceremony. She expects council, however, to be back at work this week.

“I’m looking forward to working with the new council,” she said. “We have a lot of work ahead of us. There are many issues we continue to work on with health, education, housing and continuing to build on our economic development.”

Cook-Searson noted work will continue on finding enough staff to begin 24-hour treatment at the Woodland Wellness Centre, as well as with Northlands College to offer training programs for roles there and with Kitsaki Management Limited Partnership.

“We are continuing to work on cows and plows,” she said. “We are working on getting it resolved. I made a call to our lawyer and to Minister Marc Miller. I’m just waiting for a callback, so we can get working on the negotiations.”
