Council waiting for data from CAMP, moves new animal bylaw adoption until next meeting

Council has again delayed a decision on whether or not to amend a bylaw to allow liquor retail stores to be open longer hours.

At a regular council meeting on Tuesday, the request from Lakeside Spirits to amend the Sale, Distribution, and Consumption of Beverage Alcohol and Cannabis Bylaw was discussed, but ultimately tabled until the next meeting.

Council was hopeful the Community Alcohol Management Plan committee would be prepared to provide a presentation at yesterday’s meeting, but they were unable to do so within the time period council wanted.

“Basically, they’ve tabled that until the April 25 meeting because that’s when the… CAMP group are going to present to council some stats from the last couple of years in regards to the potential impact that the bylaw had,” Chief Administrative Officer Lyle Hannan said.

“Originally, we were hoping they would come during this meeting and the survey and everything would be presented together, but they weren’t able to make that meeting, so they just tabled it.”

The council agenda also called for the new Animal Control Bylaw to receive a third reading on Tuesday. The first reading occurred in March and the third reading is now likely to occur April 25 as well.

“There was some were some questions around the venomous/reptile portion of the bylaw, so I am doing a little bit of work for council before they do final reading and adoption,” Hannan said.

Some of the updates in the Animal Control Bylaw include the elimination of licence fees, introduction of lifetime licences, and other incentives for residents to properly register their dogs and cats with the municipality. This information will be useful for identification of owners when returning pets, as well as the attraction and expansion of related pet servicing businesses.

Dr. Jordan Woodsworth’s recently completed Healthy Dogs Healthy Communities Research Project was also taken into account during the update.
