Golf season begins at Eagle Point Resort

May 2, 2023 | 3:29 PM

The golf course at Eagle Point Resort has opened two weeks earlier than it did in 2022.

As of May 2, golfers were welcome to book a tee time at the nine-hole course located only a couple of kilometers north of La Ronge. In recent years, the golf course has opened as early as the end of April, but the large amount of snow in 2022 delayed the opening all the way to May 17.

“We are the most northernly [golf course] in Saskatchewan for grass greens,” owner Lolita Poirier explained.

“I don’t think we are as far behind this year as we usually are from Kachur’s or Cooke or anything like that in Prince Albert or Elk Ridge. We’re not so far behind this year. Most years, we’re two weeks behind and this year we are a week behind, so that is great.”

The resort and golf course is also open for bookings. There are a few weddings planned, as well the annual La Ronge Ice Wolves Alumni Golf Tournament, and the men’s and ladies tournaments. Poirier also noted June is typically a busy time with local school administrations bringing their staff as a way to end the academic year on a positive note.

Poirier added the greens wintered pretty well and that, for the first time, they cover one. She said the results of the experiment were good.

“I went out for a walk yesterday morning and thought ‘oh my goodness, I guess people could be golfing here,’ so it was kind of a last minute decision,” Poirier said.

“I thought we wouldn’t be open until next week, but it’s pretty dry out there and the golf cart paths are dry. There’s a little bit of spring conditions, of course, but I’m sure that will green up as soon as we get more heat.”

Poirier also expects junior golf will begin on Mondays in the coming weeks. Golf is free for those 18 and under at Eagle Point Resort.
