Hundreds join LLRIB Wellness Challenge

May 16, 2023 | 6:31 PM

There are more than 500 people participating in the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Wellness Challenge.

The challenge, which began May 8 and ends June 4, is being run online by Divergent Wellness owner Adam Swanson of Regina. Those who are registered are from Air Ronge, La Ronge, as well as the six LLRIB communities.

“It’s not a weight-loss challenge, it’s not a workout challenge, it’s a ‘be a better you’ challenge,” said Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre fitness supervisor Emma Smallwood.

“This will kind of set you on the right path of getting in your workout, getting physically active and just getting healthier. People post on this Facebook group, hold each other accountable and there are weekly Zoom calls on Thursdays about all sort of different topics like mental health, nutrition, workouts, binge eating, you name. It is kind of what people want and we kind of let the conversation go from there.”

The main access for the challenge is through a Facebook group, where participants post about their workouts, nutrition and more. Every time some comments in the group or during Zoom calls, their name is entered to win weekly prizes.

Some of the prizes include Apple AirPods, an Apple Watch, free gym memberships, running shoes, yoga bundles and water bottles. There will also be a large, yet to be determined prize for someone at the end of the challenge.

“Also, the participants get a year access to what’s called the Playbook app,” Smallwood said.

“It has Adam’s workouts in there, so you can do ones with just body weight if you don’t want to go to the gym or you don’t have access to a gym. You could do only dumbbell workouts if you still just want to do it at home and you have a couple dumbbells kicking around. Or you can do a full gym program, which is also on the app.”

Smallwood explained the idea to do the LLRIB Wellness Challenge came about after the success the same challenge had in Pinehouse Lake.
