SaskPower to upgrade power line south of Air Ronge

May 23, 2023 | 1:35 PM

SaskPower is planning on upgrading a power line serving Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

That’s according to information sent to larongeNOW from the Crown corporation, which states the new line will be about 73 kilometers long and run alongside Highway 2 from Air Ronge south to the junction with Tracey Road.

The project is currently in the plan, define and consult stage.

“Part of the line from the junction of Highway 2 and Tracey Road south to the Timber Cove Substation was previously rebuilt and upgraded. This project will complete the upgrade for the rest of the line,” the notice states.

“The current power line is near the end of its life. Rebuilding it will help ensure reliable power for those in the area for years to come and upgrading the line’s capacity from 72 kilovolts to 138 kV will support future power demand.”

SaskPower has done some initial assessments and has developed a potential line route. They are now seeking stakeholder and rights holder participation, and have started reaching out to those affected by the new line. SaskPower is looking for information about power line route options, general knowledge of the area, including environmental and heritage resources, as well as concerns about the project and how they can reduce impacts.

“As we plan projects, we use tools like databases, satellite imagery and field surveys to understand the environment we are working in,” the notice states.

“As projects move forward, we’ll make sure environmental protection standards are in place to reduce our impact on features like waterbodies, sensitive lands, wildlife and their habitats, and heritage resources. We also work with the Ministry of Environment and other regulatory agencies to ensure we meet all environmental requirements.”

SaskPower adds when completed, the investment will improve power reliability for homes and businesses, along with support for future power demand in the area.
